Learning Objectives:
Atopic eczema is neither a disease of pure barrier disturbance as it is a pure allergic disease. Immune deviation and barrier disturbance are the two sides of one coin which together make up the pathophysiology of atopic eczema. To neglect immune deviation and the subsequent development of relevant clinical allergy – as it can be proven by the atopy patch test – makes a successful long-term management of this disease very difficult.
