19-1SY Air Pollution, Climate Change and Extreme Events Leading to Asthma Exacerbations

Tuesday, 6 December 2011: 10:50 - 11:10
Auditorium (Cancún Center)

Gennaro D'amato , High Specialty-A Cardarelli Hospital, Italy

Learning Objectives:
Thunderstorm associated asthma is a dramatic example of the  allergenic potential of  pollen antigens. Pollen-allergic patients who encounter the allergenic cloud would be more susceptible to undergo an asthma attack, sometimes also severe. Subjects allergic to pollen who are in the path of the thunderstorm outflow are likely to inhale airborne pollen allergens and to experience an airway asthmatic response. Relapse is also possible.

Take home message: Subjects affected by pollen allergy should be alert to the danger of being outdoors during a thunderstorm in the pollen season.
